In memory of Lion Maryann Bamba
Maharlika Lions Club would like to inform District 4-C5 of the passing of our dear friend Lion Maryann Bamba. Lion Maryann was 57 years old and married to Lion Mark Bamba. She was Treasurer of Maharlika Lions Club as well as the LCIF Coordinator. Lion Maryann’s tireless work and dedication was instrumental in the success of our 2018 Medical Mission to the Philippines which insured our winning of District 4-C5 Humanitarian Award for 2018. Lion Maryann’s dedication to service inspired the well-being and quality of life of those she served. Lion Maryann Bamba will be missed by her friends and family.

Do you need a mentor? Do you want to be a mentor?
As a district that takes pride in emphasizing training as a key element of our overall goals and objectives, there is a need to seek out powerful ways to grow and develop the skills of our membership. A review of the literature suggests that today’s leaders from all walks of life, have had the benefit of a mentor’s wisdom and experience.
The question is, how might a mentoring program benefit our entire organization? Mentoring is more than just a cost-effective alternative to traditional training programs. It promotes knowledge sharing, leadership development, skill development, and engagement throughout the entire organization.
Membership wise we have had some good years and some poor years. Each year District 4-C5 brings in as many members as leave. Information passed on from LCI suggests that the highest rate of attrition is during the fourteenth to the eighteenth month of service, and some sources (LCI) suggest that the more accurate range is closer to six months to fourteen months.
Although as a district we are not that good at performing exit surveys with the members who leave, we hear when attending the Council of Governors and other events outside our district, that the top reasons that Lions drop are: 1) their club is not doing regular service projects and 2) the member did not have true understanding of Lionism.

Every year, the people of Elk Grove honors an Elk Grove citizen who has contributed greatly to our community and is an example of the meaning of giving. Since 1955, representatives from different Elk Grove community service organizations have presented this annual award honoring an area resident who has rendered outstanding services directly to the Elk Grove community.
For 2017-2018, the committee has selected another Elk Grove Lion to be honored as the citizen of the year at the awards banquet on November 6th. Please join us in congratulating Lion Pancho Sanchez and the Elk Grove Citizen of the year. Look at the list below and you will find that 25% of the people selected over the years are Lions.
The Elk Grove Citizen of the Year is truly a community award. The recipient of the Elk Grove Citizen of the Year award is honored at a banquet held on the first Monday in November each year. The award and banquet are co-sponsored by several local service organizations. Some of the co-sponsors include the Elk Grove Lions Club, Elk Grove Optimist Club, Pride of Laguna Creek Lions Club, Rotary Club of Elk Grove, Rotary Club of Laguna Sunrise and the Soroptimist International of Elk Grove. Over the years, several members of the Elk Grove Lions Club have been selected to receive this honor. Proceeds from this event benefit the Elk Grove Citizen of the Year scholarship which is given to a qualifying high school senior.
