Partnering with the Mexican Consulate in Sacramento

As most people know, partnering with another organization to accomplish a task makes the job much easier. In fact, if the task is something that both organizations wish to accomplish, it is even better.

In honor of Woman’s Month, the Sacramento area Lions Clubs is partnering with the Mexican Consulate, the Health Education Council and City Council member Eric Guerra’s office to provide a health screening opportunity for local women. I am sure that most readers know that the Lions Clubs’ main outreach to the public is in the area of vision. In fact, they were dubbed the “Knights of the Blind” by Helen Keller in 1925 for their work for people with vision impairments.

The Lions will provide their “Mobile Vision Van” and volunteer optometrists to provide vision screenings at the Health Fair on Saturday, March 12th between 9:00 am and 2:00 pm at the parking lot at the Mexican Consulate at 2093 Arena Blvd, in Sacramento. The Lions also plan to have about 200 pairs of glasses for women and 100 pairs of glasses for children to distribute for free.

In addition to the services provided by the Lions Clubs of Greater Sacramento, there will be other service providers. There will be HIV exams, COVID-19 and flu shots, blood pressure and glucose exams, etc…  Check out the flyer below for more info on the services to be provided.

District Governor Donna Prince will bake a variety of pies that will be auctioned off at our Cabinet Meeting in Woodland on February 5th.  LCIF Chair PDG Andy Anderson will donate a Pin Board to the auction and also serve as Auctioneer.

Donations will go into the District LCIF account.  This is your opportunity to support LCIF and take home a delicious pie or prize.

Bring you checkbooks or cash and support this effort for Disaster Relief.

Only one of each pie will be available;  Apple, Cherry, Blackberry, Pecan and Blueberry.

Specialty Lions Clubs

You may not realize it, but quite often we form specialty Lions Clubs to meet the specific wants and needs of people in our community who would like to be a part of a club that more directly fits with the activities that they may want to do in the community.

The Specialty Club program is designed to create clubs whose members share a common interest or passion, allowing them to connect with one another on a deeper level. For example, they may share a hobby, profession, culture, common service or life experience.

Forming specialty clubs allows groups of people around the world to turn their passions into rewarding service projects that directly benefit their communities.

Joining a specialty Lions club is a great way a great way for all generations to meet people who share common interests and build leadership skills while serving your community.

For example, locally we have a Nepalese club. We also have clubs that are made up primarily of people of Chinese or Filipino descent.

We are currently exploring the formation of a dog or pet lovers club, that will focus on working with the local Sacramento SPCA as well as the local animal shelters and the local Food Bank Pet Pantries.

We have had requests for forming a club for people of Hispanic descent.

As you may guess, the possibilities are endless.

Our goal is to raise $2,500 to become a Pacesetter Team!
This year’s Making Strides – Sacramento event will be held on Sunday, October 17, 2021 at the State Capitol.  I know that is a great distance for some of the clubs, so if you or your Lions can’t make it, please consider gathering and walking individually or as a group in your local areas.  If you do so, please send me photos!  I would love to share them.
I have included a flyer of the event and registration/donation details and would be happy to assist you if needed.

Lions Community Blood Drive

We are coordinating another Lions Community Blood Drive, and this one will be our first-ever to be held on a Saturday!  The date is March 27, 2021, and the hours will be 11 AM to 3 PM.  The location will be the same as our November blood drive, in the large conference room (the Sacramento Room) at Vitalant Headquarters, located at the former Mather Air Force Base.
A question came up about timing from a potential blood donor who is scheduled to receive the 2nd vaccination three days before the blood drive.
I have communicated with staff at Vitalant.  I have been informed that there is NO waiting period between receiving either the Moderna or the Pfizer vaccines and donating blood.  When you are asked about recent vaccinations during the registration process at the blood drive, simply tell the staff person which vaccine you received so that it can be added to your Vitalant record.

NCLSA Needs Directors

NCLSA (Northern California Lions Sight Association) is a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation whose members are all Lions in good standing from the Lions Clubs of District 4-C5.

The Board of Directors are composed of 16 elected Directors, along with our immediate Past NCLSA President, the current District Governor, Vice District Governors, and our Immediate Past District Governor.

What does the NCLSA do?

  • We Provide Assistance To Citizens That Need Various Forms Of Eye
    Surgery.
  • We Have Provided Many Donations To Society for the Blind, UC Davis Eye Center And More.
  • We Have A Well-Equipped Large Van For Eye Screening.
  • We Purchased PlusOptix Eye Screening Machines.
  • We Do So Much For The Community.

2021 Montreal Lions Clubs International Convention to be a Virtual Event

Due to the continuing concerns about the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the board of directors voted to transition the 2021 Montreal Lions Clubs International Convention to a virtual event that will be delivered totally online. This decision was made with the health and safety of our Lions, staff and vendors in mind as limiting international travel and large gatherings is key to global containment strategies.

Although we are disappointed that we won’t be able to host this event in person, we are excited about hosting our first virtual international convention that can safely connect Lions from around the world. We are still finalizing the details of your new convention experience, and will share those with you as soon as they are ready.

Here are some important details about the 2021 virtual convention we’d like to share with you:

  • Everyone’s invited – Our 2021 convention will be a virtual event that’s open to all Lions and Leos around the world.
  • Registration fees – The registration fee will be US$50 until March 31, then US$75 beginning April 1. The registration fee for Leos will be US$30 regardless of date. Convention is currently scheduled for June 25-29. Additional event and registration details will be provided soon.
  • Current registrants – Lions who are currently registered for convention will receive an email soon with more information about their registration options.
  • Elections – Executive officer and international director elections will be conducted electronically, and voting procedures will be forthcoming.
  • Convention updates – Check our convention website LCICon for convention updates and details as they become available.

This global health pandemic has forced us all to make decisions and changes that place health and safety first. However, we are optimistic that with each new day there is hope, and as Lions, we continue to find new ways to stay connected, safely serve our communities and continue our global mission of service.

We appreciate your understanding during this challenging time for our organization and the world, and thank you for your incredible service as a Lion.
