Celebrating the Life of Doug Wight
PDG Douglas “Doug” McSwain Wight passed away at home on May 27, 2022 at age 78. He had recently been ill but his passing was untimely and unexpected.
PDG Doug was born on August 3, 1943 to Bill and Dorothy Wight in Berkeley, on his sister Diana’s 5th birthday. She was upset with him at first, but she eventually accepted, then learned to love her baby brother and their shared birthday. Doug grew up in the Bay Area, then moved to Grass Valley in 1985, where he found his true community and home. He worked in the Title Insurance industry for 47 years before he retired in 2010.
His true passion was volunteerism. Over the years he gave his time to Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital, Sierra Services for the Blind, and the Nevada County Grand Jury. But Doug’s longest-lasting and most meaningful service was with Lions Club International. He joined Nevada City Lions in 1990 and remained an active member until he passed. He made a name for himself in Lions District 4C5 where he served as District Governor in 2018/2019. He was always taking on new challenges and responsibilities to help his District anyway he could. He received many, many Lions awards, but most importantly to him, he was a Progressive Melvin Jones Fellow.
PDG Doug was also an avid car enthusiast, owning some 25 cars in his lifetime, with a special place in his heart for the Buick Riviera. He was for many years a member of the Capital Buick Club and over his later years he owned both 1963 and 1984 Rivs. He loved traveling with the Club in style in his beautiful Buicks. Doug was also a huge fan of photography, genealogy and Lucille Ball. His favorite movie was the Long, Long Trailer!
PDG Doug was well-respected, dedicated, selfless, giving, kind and fun, often erupting with the biggest laugh!
He is survived by the family he cherished and who cherished him every day, his sister Diana, her children Johnnie and Jackie (and their spouses Melinda and Jim), their children, his great nieces and nephews, and their children, his great, great nephews and nieces. He was always the beloved Uncle Doug! He also had many cousins, some of whom were found through his skills in genealogy.
A Celebration of Life is planned for Saturday June 25, 2022 at 3 PM at the Higgins Lions Community Center.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lions Club International Foundation, c/o James “Andy” Anderson, 12695 Apricot Lane, Wilton, CA 95693
Partnering with the Mexican Consulate in Sacramento
As most people know, partnering with another organization to accomplish a task makes the job much easier. In fact, if the task is something that both organizations wish to accomplish, it is even better.
In honor of Woman’s Month, the Sacramento area Lions Clubs is partnering with the Mexican Consulate, the Health Education Council and City Council member Eric Guerra’s office to provide a health screening opportunity for local women. I am sure that most readers know that the Lions Clubs’ main outreach to the public is in the area of vision. In fact, they were dubbed the “Knights of the Blind” by Helen Keller in 1925 for their work for people with vision impairments.
The Lions will provide their “Mobile Vision Van” and volunteer optometrists to provide vision screenings at the Health Fair on Saturday, March 12th between 9:00 am and 2:00 pm at the parking lot at the Mexican Consulate at 2093 Arena Blvd, in Sacramento. The Lions also plan to have about 200 pairs of glasses for women and 100 pairs of glasses for children to distribute for free.
In addition to the services provided by the Lions Clubs of Greater Sacramento, there will be other service providers. There will be HIV exams, COVID-19 and flu shots, blood pressure and glucose exams, etc… Check out the flyer below for more info on the services to be provided.
For more information, you can contact Derek Ledda or Jack Edwards from the local Lions Clubs.
Specialty Lions Clubs
You may not realize it, but quite often we form specialty Lions Clubs to meet the specific wants and needs of people in our community who would like to be a part of a club that more directly fits with the activities that they may want to do in the community.
The Specialty Club program is designed to create clubs whose members share a common interest or passion, allowing them to connect with one another on a deeper level. For example, they may share a hobby, profession, culture, common service or life experience.
Forming specialty clubs allows groups of people around the world to turn their passions into rewarding service projects that directly benefit their communities.
Joining a specialty Lions club is a great way a great way for all generations to meet people who share common interests and build leadership skills while serving your community.
For example, locally we have a Nepalese club. We also have clubs that are made up primarily of people of Chinese or Filipino descent.
We are currently exploring the formation of a dog or pet lovers club, that will focus on working with the local Sacramento SPCA as well as the local animal shelters and the local Food Bank Pet Pantries.
We have had requests for forming a club for people of Hispanic descent.
As you may guess, the possibilities are endless.
If you are interested in being a part of the formation of a new specialty club, let us know.
